Celebrate International Women’s Day with this recital offering chamber music performed by the musicians of Ginkgoh Salon. The concert will evoke the intimate atmosphere of the 19th century salon, where music, literature, and inspiration are shared in an elegant setting.
Ginkgoh Salon features Dr. Ann Lemke (oboe, oboe d’amore, and English horn) and Amanda Sabelhaus (piano). The program will encompass works by a variety of women composers of the 19th century, including Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Clara Schumann, Clémence de Grandval, Johanna Kinkel, Pauline Viardot, Carolina Uccelli, and Cécile Chaminade. Dr. Lemke will share background information on the composers and the poetry they set to music. As a special nod to Kalamazoo, the concert will feature a premiere of sacred music by local composer Margery Stomne Selden (1925-2022), arranged for oboe d’amore and piano. This year marks the centennial of Dr. Selden’s birth, making this International Women’s Day an apt time to honor her legacy within the music community of Michigan. “We’ve enjoyed getting to know Margery Selden’s beautiful music and are excited to share it with the community,” Lemke says.
This special performance will take place from 4:00-6:00 pm (doors open at 3:40) at the Ladies’ Library Association (LLA) located at 333 South Park Street, Kalamazoo. Free parking is available in the LLA lot on the southeast corner of Park and Lovell Streets. Light refreshments will be served during intermission.
Tickets are available through Eventbrite and are $30 plus processing fees.
